Building and Zoning Department

The Building Department is responsible for the issuance of building permits for new construction and renovations. The applications are reviewed for compliance with zoning codes, the Florida Building Code and other regulatory agencies. The Town would like to stress that it is against state law to do business with an unlicensed contractor.

Making sure that you use a licensed contractor and that your contractor has the necessary permits is for your benefit and protection. Inspections by qualified, licensed inspectors are required to insure the completed work meets all code requirements and that your contractor has used proper materials. Please contact the Building Department at 305-993-1786 if you should have any questions as to whether a permit is required. You can also contact us by e-mail: buildingdepartment@bayharborislands.org  In general, a permit is required for any work or repair with a value of $500 or more.

If you wish to determine whether a contractor is licensed with the state, you may contact the State of Florida's Department of Business and Professional Regulation at 850-487-1395 or www.state.fl.us/dbpr/. You may contact Miami-Dade County at (305) 375-2568 to inquire if a contractor is licensed with the County.

Contractors are required to register with the Town prior to issuance of any permits for work. Up-to-date insurance and licensing is required at all times.
